Upcoming e-book observatory events

12th March, 2009

It’s conference time again and there are a number of events and seminars on the e-books observatory project coming up. It is excellent timing as the project is drawing to a close and there is a lot to say!

Dispelling myths with real evidence: This session will present the initial findings from the user surveys that had over 48,000 responses and the log data analysis. Dispelling many myths such as people not wanting to read online and confirming that the Google Generation is an oversimplification, the findings have very important implications for the future of the e-books market.

Helping your customers find and buy your e-books: The e-books market is still trying to resolve the issues that surround the supply chain. It is no secret that librarians are struggling to find what e-books are available and in what formats.  This seminar looks at some of the problems caused by the markets reliance on a limited number of channels and examines what the industry can do to resolve the problems. Speakers include Caren Milloy of JISC Collections, Jon Windus of Nielsen Book, Bob Kelly of Gardners and Mark Majurey of Taylor and Francis. Chaired and introduced by Sydney Davies of The Booksellers Association

Some findings and how they will be used: Lorraine Estelle, CEO of JISC Collections, will present some of the initial findings from the project and how these findings will be used by JISC Collections to push the e-books market forward. There is no time left for snoozing, time to wake up and get on!

What have we learnt and how will it inform the future? Four speakers will present what they have learnt from the project, what it means to their role and how they intend to use the findings. Presentations from a librarian, an aggregator, a publisher and JISC Collections will look how the findings can be used in a practical way.
